Fatherhood in Many Forms

The role of a father is one of the most important yet overlooked roles in a child’s life. While media loves to highlight the haphazard babysitting skills of dads; they are capable of much more. The relationship with a father directly impacts development of character, esteem and social behavior. The voice of a good father shapes identity and provides approval. Fatherhood is a call that many men answer to. So let’s acknowledge and celebrate the different fatherhood types and how they impact the lives around them.

Community Mentors

Remember the teacher in school that wouldn’t let the boys sag their pants or use curse words? Or that football coach that challenged his players to make wise choices on and off of the field? Know a spoken word artist that teaches young boys and girls how to express their emotions through poetry? These are our mentors. Men that show up and are examples of character, hard work and commitment. They are pillars in communities and invest in developing our next generation.

Spiritual Leaders

One of the most important fatherhood roles in our lives are our pastors. Like a natural father, they lead and guide us. They live selfless lives; dedicated to coaching, challenging correcting, and celebrating us as we navigate life’s many challenges. They teach us the truth of God’s word which empowers us to win and live out our purpose.

Fathers

A father is a man who takes responsibility for your upbringing. While mothers have learned to do it all, fathers bring something special to the parenting table. Their presence alone provides feelings of protection and comfort. They teach unforgettable life lessons in their own way. From learning how to ride a bike to purchasing your first car; fathers are right there telling you everything they know. A father will work tirelessly to support his family financially. He may never say it, but everything that he does will be to see his children do more, have more and become more than he did.

God

There is one source of fatherhood in your life that is undeniable and irreplaceable. The relationship with your Heavenly Father. While you won’t see His name appear on your birth certificate, He’s known you even before you were in your mother’s womb. For Him it was love at first sight and He’s literally obsessed with you.

Even if you’ve been void of positive father-figures or your father is no longer with you; you have God. He’s the best kind of father. His love is unending and unwavering. His love affirms and establishes you. His love never fails. There is much to say about God’s amazing love for us. We will spend our entire lives accepting, learning and experiencing His love.

This year, let’s appreciate the many fathers around us that are making our communities and our lives better. Let them know just how valuable they are; especially the one above.
